Welcome to the 3rd Annual BMW of Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon!

Team Magic and the Chattanooga Track Club are proud to welcome the 2007 event title sponsor, BMW of Chattanooga.  We are happy to have them on board to support this exciting triathlon and look forward to introducing our racers to some of their fine automobiles at the event site!

“BMW of Chattanooga, an ardent supporter of Chattanooga and the Tri-State area, is honored to sponsor the BMW of Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon, a world class event for the Chattanooga Area,” said Doug DeLoach, Dealer Operator of BMW of Chattanooga. “The event’s selection as a World Championship Qualifier and its Ross’s Landing location will insure an exciting event for both participants and spectators. With over 1,500 athletes participating, we are looking forward to an exciting race through some of Chattanooga’s most admirable locations and attractions,” he said.

This downtown triathlon takes the place of the popular Chattanooga Dam Triathlon of years past and the original Riverbend Triathlon from "many moons" ago.   The Chattanooga triathlon tradition began over 25 years ago - we are happy to keep it alive and hope you agree we have developled one of the best races in the country - not to be missed!

Look for a great weekend expo, great downtown Chattanooga restaurants and entertainment, and a fantastic day of racing along Chattanooga's revitalized waterfront.  For newcomers and veterans alike...hold onto your tri bars, we are promising you a great weekend!

Stick around and enjoy the day:  Plan on bringing tents, chairs and your family to enjoy the waterfront!  We have moved our event tents to be on the "road level" adjacent to the new finish line location so the lower grassy level by the river is available for racers to hang out after your race is over while you wait for the awards.  Racers will be invited to enjoy plenty of complimentary post race food and drink and there will be vendors on site selling food and drink for your family and friends.   If you do bring a tent, please note you cannot use stakes in the ground.

Chattanooga Triathlon Recognized as USA Triathlon Regional Championship

The Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon will be designated as a Regional Championship.  As a Regional Championship, the race will be used as a qualifier for the USAT National Age Group Championship in 2008, being held in Portland, Oregon (date to be announced.)  Any athlete that finishes in the top 33% or top five finishers (whichever is greater) in each age group will qualify for the National Age Group Championship.

The Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon will ALSO be used as a 2008 Short Course Triathlon World Championship Qualifier for Vancouver, Canada (June 7-8).

2007 Regional Championship selected events will be used to fill an additional 10 slots per age group (one per region). The top age group winner will qualify for the 2008 World Championships with slots rolling down to 3rd place. Age group winners will have two weeks to secure their slot. If the age group winner declines their Worlds slot, the roll down process will begin. The roll down process will be given a two week deadline from the deadline date of the age group winner.

TEAM MAGIC SUPPORTS TRIATHLETES FOR AFRICA EFFORT

Team Magic is proud to support this great cause spearheaded by Nashville area triathlete Chad Nikazy. New Seed of Hope, a ministry headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee, with offices also in Nairobi, Kenya, announced today that they have formally partnered with Triathletes for Africa, a new charitable start-up also based in Franklin, TN. The partnership will result in thousands of running shoes being donated by Triathletes from across the United States and distributed by New Seed of Hope in places like the Kibera slum in downtown Nairobi.

The shoes will be collected at races and competitions hosted throughout the country after the programs initial launch in the Southeast. Team Magic, Inc race organization, with offices in Birmingham and Nashville, is partnering with Triathletes for Africa and New Seed of Hope to bring the idea to life.

“Team Magic is thrilled to have the opportunity to assist Triathletes for Africa in this charitable endeavor,” said Faye Yates at the Team Magic, Inc Nashville office. “We applaud those who are involved in this effort and thank them for including us at the grass roots level. It is our pleasure to connect the participants at our events with Triathletes for Africa.”

Shoes will be collected at the following Team Magic events this season: BMW Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon, Cedars of Lebanon Triathlon, Mountain Lakes Triathlon, Old Hickory Lake Triathlon, and Music City Triathlon.

EVENT TIMING

All Team Magic events are timed with the latest timing technology, AMB-Identification & Timing.  Each athlete is given a transponder to put on their ankle.  As the athlete crosses over a detection point, the loop activates the transponder which relays its unique identification number. That unique ID is passed on to the Activ Decoder which gives the “passing” a precise time stamp. The passing data is then handled by the timing software in a connected laptop or computer. You will need to pick up the transponder and ankle band on race morning at the WHITE TENT in the TRANSITION AREA.  PLEASE NOTE, you must present your race BIB number to receive your timing chip.  This is to be sure we get your timing correct, so please work with us on this, thank you!  The transponder is programmed to coincide with your individual race number.  The detection points will be set up to give you your individual event split times from the swim to bike to final run.  These transponders are $85 each…so if you forget to turn yours in at the end of the race or if you do not finish, please mail to us or you will be billed for $85.  You will also be body marked with your race number near the transition area.

  COURSE INFORMATION

MAIN STAGING AREA - TRANSITION FLOW AND FINISH LINE

The main staging area is on the two lawns at the corner of Chestnut Street and Riverfront Parkway.  The finish line is on Riverfront Parkway between the river and the transition area.

The race transition area is organized based on your assigned race number.  Since you will be starting the swim based on your race number assigned by age group per USAT rules for championship and qualifier racers, you will be traveling the same distance through transition as those you are competing against in your age group.  The bike racks are marked by ranges of "7" numbers, beginning with 1 through 7 and so on.  You do not have to rack in numerical order ON the rack, but your bike must be racked on the rack designated for your race number range.

Click here for a map of the transition and main staging area

SWIM COURSE

The swim course is 1.5k point-to-point in the Tennessee River.  The swim will go with the current.   Shuttles will take athletes from the main staging area to the University of Tennessee Chattanooga Rowing Center.  The shuttles will leave from the corner of Chestnut and Riverfront Parkway, adjacent to the race transition area. The swim exit will be at the North Terrace on the waterfront, before the City Pier.  You will run up some stairs from the waterfront to the transition area.  The race transition will be on the waterfront side of the Chattanooga Aquarium on Riverfront Parkway on the "South Green."  SHOULD YOU REQUIRE ASSISTANCE ON THE SWIM AND TAKE A LIFE PRESERVER FROM THE WATER VOLUNTEERS, PLEASE RETURN IT TO THE FOOD TENT IN THE POST RACE AREA.  If you DO use a flotation device to MOVE FORWARD, you will be disqualified from the race.

The water temperature is expected to be somewhere close to 28 degrees C / 82 degrees F, which means NOT wetsuit legal.  Feel free to bring a wetsuit just in case we dip below 78 F!

SWIM START INFORMATION:

The swim will be conducted in a time-trial fashion with individuals starting the race at approximately 5 second intervals based on race number, with racer number 1 being first.   Since this race is the USA Triathlon Southeast Regional Championship and 2008 ITU Triathlon World Championship Qualifier, we will organize racers by age group per USA Triathlon rules for championship and qualifier races.  Any USAT PRO CARD CARRYING RACERS will be allowed to begin at the front in an ELITE wave.  This is not allowed for any amateur racers due to USAT rules.

BIKE COURSE (NEW COURSE!!)

The NEW bike course is new AGAIN!  Yes, it is true.  We continue to work with the City of Chattanooga and the Tennessee Department of Transportation to bring you the best possible race course.  While we know you like to compare your race times from year to year on the SAME course, we hope you understand that keeping the same course is the easiest option for us, so, if we could, we would.  There are many reasons for the course change, but mostly due to safety concerns regarding road conditions and traffic control.

Click here for an interactive course map with course profile

The 2007 bike course leaves the transition left onto Riverfront Parkway, left onto ML King, onto Hwy 27 North, turnaround just before Hwy 153, exit Hwy 27 onto ML King, right on ML King, right on Riverside/Riverfront, end at Transition at Ross Landing Park.

RUN COURSE (PARTIALLY NEW)

The 10k run course is an out-and-back course through part of downtown and on the Riverwalk.

Water stations will be located approximately every mile and in the transition area.

Click here for an interactive course map with course profile

Runners exit the transition lawn on the east side, onto Chestnut Street. The course goes North on Chestnut, taking a quick right onto Riverfront Parkway. At the top of the hill, angle left onto the Veterans Bridge exit ramp. Cross under the High Street overpass. Immediately after crossing under the Riverwalk bridge, turn left, up the steps. Continue bending to the left onto the Riverwalk and across the bridge that you just passed under. After crossing Veterans Bridge / Georgia Avenue, turn left onto the first access sidewalk on your left, then a quick right onto Battery Place. Stay on Battery Place until the bottom of the hill (at Mabel) where you get back on the Riverwalk proper. From this point, the course follows the Riverwalk.  The 5k turnaround is located roughly 3/10 mile past the Curtain Pole parking area and bathroom.
