Relay Team Rules & Information
THE BASICS
Triathlon: The relay team usually consists of one swimmer, one biker, and one runner. At Team Magic events, we will allow one of the relay members to do two of the "legs", meaning one person can choose to do two of the three sports and the other team member does one.
Duathlon: The relay team usually consists of one runner and one biker, with the runner completing both running legs of the event. At Team Magic races, we will allow two runners and one biker.
Can an individual racer also be a relay team member? At Team Magic races, YES they can. If you have trouble finding a person to complete your relay team, we will allow someone competing as an individual to do your first segment or first two segments of the event, then pass off the RELAY timing device to you. It is important for the individual racer to know that they have to go to the RELAY tent (as described below) to give the TEAM member the RELAY timing chip before they proceed with their own individual competition. The most popular example of this is an individual racer "doing the swim leg" for a team.

HOW THE RELAY PROCESS IS CONDUCTED ON RACE DAY
- Relay teams will be assigned a race number based on their estimated swim time for most Team Magic races. At the Music City Triathlon, the Relay Teams start in a WAVE together early in the race start sequence.
- Your team will use your assigned number for all of the following race logistics.
- All relay team members need to be body marked with assigned team number.
- Relay Team runner needs to have the race "bib" number and is required to present this number to pick up the TEAM timing chip and give to swimmer on race morning before start.
- There is a tent in the transition area designated as the relay "timing chip" handoff area. All relays chip exchanges will take place under the tent. Please locate tent before race start! There will be a RELAY sign ON the tent.
- The swimmer wears the timing chip during the swim. The swimmer will proceed to "relay exchange tent" and pass the chip to the biker in the exchange area ONLY.
- The biker can be fully dressed with helmet and shoes on if they choose. Helmet number provided with race registration packet needs to be placed on the front of helmet.
- Biker proceeds to your assigned bike rack, (bike racks are assigned by your race number range) and get bike, exit transition and start bike portion of race.
- Biker will return and rack bike in the same location on your assigned bike rack transition spot. Biker will then proceed to "relay exchange area" under the relay tent and pass chip to runner. All exchanges of chips take place in this area ONLY to minimize congestion in the transition area.
- Runner will proceed out of transition area from "relay exchange area" with paper race "Bib" number on the front of their body.
- Runner will cross finish line with paper race "Bib" number on front of their body!
- Timing chip will be collected at that time. If lost, the team will incur a $85 charge.
Thank you and have a great time! If you have ANY questions on race day, ask someone in a GREEN Team Magic logo shirt.
