COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

If you did the race in 2011 and did not like the climb on the run, you will be happy to know it is gone! New courses for 2012 with an added trail section - not crazy off-road stuff. Nothing your lightweight shoes can't handle.

usat elite duathlon national championship(10K/40K/5K)
Team Magic is proud to host elites for their national championship in a stand-alone race on Saturday. The first run will be a two loop 5k course, the bike course will be a two loop 20k course, and the second run will be one 5k loop of the first run course, run in reverse. There is 1/2 mile of off-road running at the end of the first run and beginning of the second run.

powerman alabama duathlon (10K/60K/10K)
True to the Powerman tradition, expect some great hills for both the bike and run courses - nothing too crazy, just enough to earn the name... the courses are beautiful on the peaceful roads of Oak Mountain State Park. The first run will be a two loop 5k course, the bike course will be a three loop 20k course (same as 2010 and 2011,) and the second run will be the same as the first run course, run in reverse. There is 1/2 mile of off-road running at the end of the first run and beginning of the second run.

double oak duathlon (5K/20K/2.5K)
We surveyed racers from the last two years and the vote came back to adjust the first run for the Double Oak to 5k...and we listened. The run course and bike course will be shorter versions of the Powerman distance. The course is a one loop bike, one loop first run and a one loop second run with a turnaround at 1.25 k to shorten it to half the distance of the first run.

Food & Fluid Available On Course
There will be Powerade and water on the run course. Hammer Nutrition products will be provided in your race bag and Hammer Gel will be available on the run course. PLEASE note there will NOT be Powerade at the bike bottle exchange, based on past consumption. Since so many people prefer to have their own fluid replacement, we will have water only available on the bike course, and will have water and powerade on the run course.

And as always, the Birmingham Rugby Club will be passing out water at the Powerman bottle drop!! Be sure to yell a big thank you to these guys!

TRANSITION AREA RULES

Bike must be in transition 30 minutes prior to race start. Please respect other participants that are racing before your wave start begins, or may still be racing when you are finished. Keep on alert for racers as you move in and out of transition before, during and after your race is over.

Bikes are racked according to your race number. Pre-registered race numbers are assigned based on age group within your race. Late registrants will receive last numbers and be racked by their race number only, not within age group.

CATEGORIES, AWARDS, & PRIZES
USAT AGE UP RULE
All USAT races will use the "AGE UP RULE" for award distribution and ranking. It is important that you begin in the proper wave start with respect to this rule. The age up rule means you are racing based on your age as of 12/31/12. Our computer timing program will automatically calculate your age based on your birth date and the age up rule criteria.

categories for powerman and double oak duathlons

  • Elite - Card carrying pros or elites that have had resume approved
  • Individual (Age Group) - Open for all age group men and women
  • Paratriathlete - Physically Challenged Division - MORE INFO
  • Beginners - Participated in no more than 3 triathlons
  • Clydesdale - 200+ pound men
  • Athena - 150+ pound women

Your category CANNOT change once the race starts. If a category is not indicated when you register, you will be entered as an individual. If you choose Beginner, you will fall back in your age group if you do not win an award in your chosen category.

Want to change from Powerman to Double Oak or Double Oak to Powerman? You can do that through imathlete.com. Now racers can change from one race to another without having to contact Team Magic.

If the cost increases, you pay the difference on the spot.
If the cost is less, you can make the change BUT no refund or credit is allowed.

1. Go to "My Registrations" in imAthlete.com.
2. Click "Edit Registrations"
3. Enter their confirmation code and follow the simple instructions.

Use the same instructions above to make other edits to your race information (email address, etc...) - all changes must be complete before online registration is closed - the Wednesday night before each event.

"Should I be a beginner?"

If you do not place in the top three beginners position you will fall back into the open age groups for awards. So we recommend for your first 3 races, choose "Beginner," then move on to any other category...

Important Note About Our Event Awards

Team Magic hopes you will join us after each race for the awards ceremony - this is the grand finale of each event and is held very soon after the final race finisher.

Our awards are most often product awards and a recognition award of your placement. We do not ship awards or make them available for pick up after the awards ceremony is completed. Please make arrangements for someone to pick up your award at the event or plan on staying for the awards ceremony. Award categories are available on each race web page.

Preliminary results will be posted as soon as possible at the race site - the location will be announced by our race announcer. If you see that you will be receiving an award but cannot stay for the ceremony, please designate a fellow racer, friend, or volunteer to claim your award. All awards not claimed at the race site will be distributed to race sponsors, city officials, race supporters and at future race prize drawings.

Complete race results will be posted on our web site as soon as possible after each event, usually within 24 hours.
